Banyana Banyana’s search for first victory in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup still continues as the South Africans suffered another defeat, losing 1-0 to China on Thursday evening.

Coach Desiree Ellis’s team remain the only side to not have registered victory in Group B, and they languish at the bottom of the group table with nil points, arguably following the easier of the team’s fixtures.

It was Li Ying’s fine finish that ensured that Banyana remain winless so far in the women’s biggest football tournament.

The Steel Roses of China redeemed themselves when a goal from Ying, just five minutes before halftime saw the Chinese take the lead into the break.

The narrow win by Bruno Bini’s side has placed his side in third position in Group B, and are now level with Spain on three points.

Downsides and Upsides

Although the South African ladies showed character and continued to fight until the final whistle of the game, despite trailing by one goal, results were not coming their way.

Speaking to the media, coach Ellis expressed her disappointment follow the full-time result in Paris, and also spoke of notable positives from the clash.

The next stop for Banyana Banyana is in Montpellier, where they will face Group B leaders and world no. 2, Germany. The match will kick-off at 18h00.
