The Free State Crinums maintained their lead at the top of the Division A leaderboard after a much-needed rest day on Day 6 of the 2024 Telkom Netball League, at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

Their slim margin of six goals keeps them ahead of the Gauteng Jaguars with both teams tied on seven points, after three wins each. The Golden Fireballs secure the third spot, comfortably distancing themselves from the chasing teams.

The Kingdom Stars continued their unbeaten streak on Wednesday, leading Division B with five wins for 10 points. The Sunbirds and the Eastern Cape Comets are tied for second place on 9 points from four wins and one loss each.

In Division B’s Wednesday match of the day, the Kingdom Queens clashed with Tshukudu in a tightly contested match that went down to the wire, with just one goal separating them, the Queens emerged victorious after showcasing a well-rounded performance.

It was their proficiency in the shooting circle that ultimately made the difference, with Phindile Sithole earning the Player of the Match title for her instrumental role in guiding her team to a 60-42 triumph.

In the clash between the Lillies and the EC Comets, the Comets continued their streak of upsets for their fourth in 5 games under the guidance of Zandile Njeza and Jeany Steyn. Despite a slow start, the Lillies made a comeback, but couldn’t maintain the intensity, falling short against the Comets.

In Division A, the Limpopo Baobabs started strongly in the first quarter, taking a two-goal lead, but struggled to maintain momentum against the Northwest Flames, and despite coach Emily Mathosa making changes in the goal attack position to complement Muhluri Hlatshwayo in the shooting position, the Baobabs couldn’t cause an upset.

On the other hand, Coach Elsunet du Plessis introduced Jade Egwatu to the goal-shooting position for the Flames, which proved to be a game-changer. Currently sitting in fifth position, the Flames outplayed the Baobabs, who remain at the bottom of the A division log standings without a piont in five matches.

The day concluded with a battle between the Aloes and the Southern Stings. While the Aloes started strong, they faltered in the later stages of the game, succumbing to the dominance of the Stings. Despite facing illness among their players, coach Nicoline Martin’s strategic changes and player rotation favoured the Stings, proving too formidable for the Aloes.
