The Free State Crinums lead the Gauteng Jaguars at the top of the 2024 Telkom Netball League Division A leaderboard by a slim goal difference margin of 6 after Day 5 of the national champs at Ellis Park Arena in the City of Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Tuesday, 30 April, 2024.
Crinums and Jaguars are tied on seven points after matching each other with three wins withe the draw testament to their matched results, coming from their match on Sunday against each other. The Golden Fireballs lie third behind them, comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.


The unbeaten Kingdom Stars lead the tournament’s Division B prospects with a game in hand over the Sunbirds, each with four wins for 8 points to lead the log, but the Sunbirds having lost their fifth encounter against the very KD Stars. Eastern Cape Comets lead the leaderboards’ third place tussle over the Freestate Sonoblomo.
The best of Day 4 action saw a battle of experience between two national coaches bringing to court two different game plans, in the match between the Crinums and the Fireballs. Coach Dumisani Chauke, “It was the cracker of the day.”
The starting line-up for the Fireballs favoured defensive height with Tinita van Dyk in the circle to assist with rebounds, to counter Karla Pretorius’ height. Refiloe Ntseka did very well with ball placement and feeding into the circle, but it appeared at times that the Fireballs connections were lost at centre court.
In the match between the Stings and the Jaguars, the tenacity of the Stings was shown as they didn’t let go, but the match result was settled with the Jaguars winning the game.

In the B Division, the Sunbirds and the Lillies youngsters demonstrated gutsy play, but tired bodies and minds introduced increased errors.
The Kingdom Queens proved very impressive in their performance on the day, highlighting recovery methods when playing two matches in less than 24hrs, as in the case of the Diamonds.

As day five hit, it was again shown that bodies are starting to get fatigued, and injuries are creeping in, with several players walking around with strapping, leading to the tempo and match intensity decreasing.
The Northern Cape Diamonds recorded their first win of the season in a tightly contested match against the Lillies, a match where both teams were pitted against each other equally half for half. Both teams showed utmost determination to win the game. The Lillies won Qs 1 and 2, only for the Diamonds to come back stronger after halftime and claim a 47 – 38 victory.
The match between the Crinums and the Flames, the last showcasing of Day 5, ended with the Crinums walking away with a 48 – 33 victory over the Flames, advancing their tournament title plans admirably.
