It was a semi-final confirmation for North West who thumped the KZN Raiders 6-0 on the second day of the group stage play at the 2024 SA Hockey Under 21 IPT at UCT at the University of Cape Town on Wednesday, 1 May, 2024.
Having had to work incredibly hard for their opening day victory against the Northern Blues, Jan du Preez opened for North West and closed the scoring in a massive 6-0 win complimented by a Chanel Genis brace, Teshawn de la Rey, and Arisha van Niekerk, in a far easier encounter against the KZN Raiders than would have been expected.
Wednesday’s second Pool A tie saw the Northern Blues overcome a spirited and nuggety challenge from Free State to win 4-1, coming from behind after Karla Marais scored for the central province.
Their Northern responded with an equaliser courtesy skipper Cerian Fourie before Baylee Engelke earned the lead, and they would not relinquish the pressure before adding two more goals from Danielle McCann and Laiken Brisset.
In Pool B Western Province could only score one goal through Coreen Matthee, but it was enough for a victory over their “B” side WP Peninsula.
The victory moves the hosts to six points, and they are favourites to progress to the semi-final but there is a mathematical chance for them to pipped, so the bottle remains corked for the time being.
Southern Gauteng got themselves a first victory with their 4-nil Wednesday win over Eastern Province. Hannah Gerber notched the opening goal in the first quarter before two goals in two minutes in the second quarter, by Hannah Smyth to double the lead and Gerber for her second moments later, before Amber Fairon put the game to bed late on with the fourth.
In Thursday’s action, all four Pool B teams can still qualify for the semi-finals, with the final pool-stage fixtures seeing Southerns take on Western Province, and Pens face off against Eastern Province.
It’s a relatively straight-forward virtual ‘quarter final’ when KZN Raiders take on Northern Blues to determine who will join Pool A log leader North West in the final four of the tournaments.
All games will be live streamed through the Supersport Schools app.
