The K1 race of the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Shaoxing, China took place early on Saturday morning, 19 October 2019, where Jenna Ward claimed ninth position, while Bridgitte Hartley ended 16th.
There was a solid start from South African race favourites Jenna Ward and Bridgitte Hartley as they took the lead in front of the group of eight in lap one. However, Hartley found herself off the front bunch in the second lap, but it was Ward who managed to continue with her brilliant racing to keep Team South Africa in the forefront.
In the third lap, Ward was dropped to the second group, while Hartley lagged in the third bunch. With four more laps to go, Vanda Kiszli from Hungary led the pack, with Ward in the bunch of four chasing 200m behind.
In the last full lap, Ward showed her eagerness to catch Spain’s Eva Barrios who was close to the front four, however Ward claimed a ninth-place finish in the end.
