SA U19 Women’s cricket coach Dinesha Devnarain in Rwanda is imparting her knowledge to female coaches in Rwanda as the country hosts the ICC U19 Women’s T20 Africa Qualifiers, the experienced former Proteas international looking to empower coaches ahead of the U19 T20 World Cup in 2025.
The Africa qualifiers are crucial to the seven teams participating as only one side will progress to represent the continent at the event next year. Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Tanzania, Namibia, Kenya (qualified from Division 2), and Malawi (qualified from Division 2) will battle it for the solitary spot and Devnarain’s experience will be just what her fellow coaches are looking to learn from.
Rwanda and Zimbabwe are two teams familiar with participating in top international competitions as both teams played in the inaugural U19 Women’s World Cup in South Africa in 2023. The hosts secured a resounding 6-wicket win over Kenya on Tuesday, 24 September, as they look to use their home ground advantage to propel them into the cricket showpiece.
Devnarain has been preparing her South African team for the World Cup and has used their various matches to fine tune various aspects of their game as well as begin plotting what her team will look like for the contest in Malaysia.
The former Proteas Women all-rounder has made her mark on the game since she was appointed in the dual role of U19 Women’s Coach, as well as Cricket South Africa’s National Academy Head Coach.
Devnarain has been credited with guiding the likes of bowlers Nonkululeko Mlaba and Nondumiso Shangase to the top player and are now mainstays in the Proteas Women’s setup.
