England Women cruised to a 7-wicket victory over South Africa in their crucial Group B encounter of the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup 2024, held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, 07 October.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, South African captain Laura Wolvaardt led from the front with a well-crafted 42, including three boundaries.
However, Wolvaardt’s efforts were undone by England’s star spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who clean bowled her in the 14th over. Ecclestone (2/15) was the pick of the bowlers, adding the scalp of Marizanne Kapp, who fired a quick 26, to her tally.
South Africa struggled to build momentum. Tazmin Brits fell for 13 to Linsey Smith, while Anneke Bosch managed 18 before being bowled by Sarah Glenn.
Chloe Tryon was dismissed for just 2 by Charlie Dean, and despite admirable Annerie Dercksen’s late unbeaten 20*, including two boundaries and the match’s solitary six, the Proteas finished on 132/6.
England’s chase was smooth, despite an early setback when Marizanne Kapp trapped Maia Bouchier lbw for 8. Danni Wyatt-Hodge anchored the innings with a steady 43, but her stumping by Sinalo Jafta off Nonkululeko Mlaba’s delivery briefly raised South African hopes.
Alice Capsey added a brisk 19, but it was Nat Sciver-Brunt who sealed the deal for England. Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten 48*, glorified with six boundaries, guided England to 125/3 in 19.2 overs. Skipper Heather Knight remained at the crease with 0*.
South Africa’s bowlers showed grit, with Kapp’s 1/17 the pick among them, while Mlaba and Nadine de Klerk also grabbed a wicket apiece. However, England’s strong batting lineup proved too powerful, cementing their dominance in Group B.
With this 7-wicket win, England solidified their position in the tournament, while South Africa will look to regroup ahead of their match against Scotland on Wednesday in Dubai.
