Glenrose Xaba created new history with a superb running performance, breaking Elana Meyer’s South African 10km record at the Absa Run Your City 10km in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 7 July 2024.
Xaba, one of South Africa’s top runners broke Meyer’s 23-year old Women’s 10km record of 31:13 set in Budapest in 2001, setting a 43-second faster new personal best and shaving a second off Elana’s record time to finish the race in 31:12.
Despite her blistering pace, Xaba didn’t bag a podium place, ending in fourth place behind Kenyan speedster, Christine Njoki, who won the race in a time of 30:37, Ethiopia’s Debash Desta finished second in a time of 31:00, and Njoki’s fellow Kenyan Judith Kiyeng in a time of 31:10 for bronze.
Speaking after her record-breaking performance, Xaba shared just what breaking the longstanding record would mean to her.
“I am very excited to break the record of Elana Meyer because she told me when I was still young and running under her development program, Endurocad, that I have too much oxygen in my lungs, and that one day I will run one of her records.
“I want to thank my team, my coaches Caster and Violet Semenya, my manager, Leroy, Puma for organising the fast shoes before the race, and Michael Meyer for inviting me to the race.”
The Boxer Athletic Club runner has had a sensational month after setting a new personal best in the Half Marathon Championships in Gqeberha on Saturday, 3 June, 2023, racing to the title in a time of 1:08:36 for a victory saw her clinch her fourth consecutive half marathon title.
