The second of the three-match IDFC First Bank T20I series between India and the visiting Proteas Women was abandoned after the South African batting innings due to persistent rain, at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, 7 July 2024.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to field first, but the start of play was delayed due to light rain. Once play got under way, it was clear that both teams were determined to make their mark: India was out for blood, and South Africa wanted to clamp down on that much-needed series win.

South African openers captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits put on a confident 43-run opening partnership before Wolvaardt (22) was sent back to the dugout, caught by Radha Yadav at point off the bowling of Pooja Vastrakar.

Marizanne Kapp joined the in-form Brits and together they ticked away at the scoreboard, adding 32 runs before Deepti Sharma claimed the wicket of Kapp (20) just after the powerplay.

Anneke Bosch and Brits added a further 38-runs before Brits (52), who scored her second half-century in the series with six fours and one maximum, was stumped by Uma Chetty off the bowling of Sharma.

With South Africa on 113/3 after 14 overs, the big-hitting Chloe Tryon and Bosch put on a further 18-run partnership, when Yadav took a brilliant caught-and-bowled wicket to dismiss the dangerous-looking Tryon (12) who hit two fours in her stance at the crease, leaving the Proteas on 131/4, with four overs remaining in their innings.

Bosch (40) fell 10 runs short of a fifth half-century when she was bowled by Shreyanka Patil, but not before she and Nadine de Klerk stitched together a calculated 33-runs contribution, which propelled South Africa to 164/5 with one over remaining.

Pooja Vastrakar added a twist by striking with the first ball of the final over in the Proteas innings, claiming the wicket of De Klerk (14), but it was the delightful cameo from Annerie Dercksen (12*) who hit three consecutive fours off her three deliveries to finish unbeaten alongside Eliz-Marie Marx (1*), for South Africa to complete their innings on 177/6.

Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma took two wickets each, with Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav contributing with a wicket apiece.

The matched was nicely poised for a thrilling second half between these two competitive teams, but was prematurely ended by the inclement weather.

The teams return to the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday for the final T20I, and the match is scheduled to be broadcast live on SuperSport Grandstand (Ch 201).
