Over the past few weeks, I have been on a journey to restart, rebalance and reenergize my body and mind as we tackle a jam-packed year in women’s sport.

Before heading off on duty for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February, which took place in Cape Town, Paarl and Gqeberha, I knew it was vital to take extra care of my health and fitness to optimize my performance for gsport at the tournament and my daily contribution to the team as Content Lead.

To get my journey underway, I headed on to social media where I came across a 21-day detox challenge set out by wellness coach, inspirational fitness figure and dynamic influencer, Juanita Khumalo.

I subscribed to her weekly #DetoxWithJua newsletter and it completely changed my wellness journey.

As much as those 21 days were a challenge, it was a perfect start which I am aiming to incorporate into my everyday life.

Here are some benefits I picked up during the detox:

1.Increased energy

While you’re detoxing, you’re stopping the influx of the things that caused you to need a detox in the first place. By cutting out the sugar, caffeine, trans fat, saturated fat, and replacing them with fresh fruits and vegetables, you’ll be getting a natural energy boost, one that comes without a resultant crash. It’s vital to stay well hydrated throughout your detox!

2.Weight loss

It’s easy to see how a detox diet would cause you to lose weight in the short-term, but a healthier way to look at it would be to establish long-term eating habits and rid yourself of unhealthy habits. Make it a point to replace bad foods with good and use your newfound energy to exercise more and be more active overall.

3.Stronger immune system

When you detox the body, you free up your organs to function the way they should. This helps to give your immune system a boost since you’ll be able to absorb nutrients better.

4.Clearer thinking

The use of a good balanced diet, meditation and exercise helps to get back in touch with your body during this time of purging and cleansing of toxins. Many of the sugar-filled and fat-filled foods that surround us each day causes us to feel lethargic and can factor heavily in the quality of our thinking.

5.Improved sense of wellbeing

Detoxing helps you to feel good, and when you feel good, good things happen. Detoxing is often used strategically to lose weight or to start a new diet plan, but really there’s no better reason than just to feel better. When you set the stage for wellbeing, you are going to improve all areas of your life.
