Eighteen-year-old gsport is making some boss moves. Soon after turning 18, not only did she throw her first house party, but for the first time, the announcement of the Finalists for the Momentum gsport Awards was broadcast live on SABC 1, as well as SABC Sport platforms.

Excitement and anticipation was already building on social media as South Africans learned that South Africa’s premium awards for women in sport had taken another turn in the right direction.

It’s a huge milestone for women, somewhat of a nod that says, you are worthy to be seen. We’ll take you to every corner of South Africa, where many people are still underprivileged but they have access to a television that gets SABC 1.

They too were able to be part of this moment in history when gsport announced the deserving Finalists that have represented their country or did their bit behind the scenes to advance and grow women’s sport.

Furthermore, founder of gsport Kass Naidoo and gsport judge and veteran broadcaster Cynthia Tshaka, who once graced the corridors and studios had a homecoming. Going back to a place where their dreams were fulfilled and their careers grew and flourished.

It was even more special to see Finalists take to social media with photos of their names being announced on TV.

The announcement was anchored by 2023 gsport Woman in TV winner Vusiwe Ngcobo, another lady who embraces the Power of Recognition. The Morning Live anchor led the broadcast with distinction, capturing the essence of the announcement perfectly.

Part of the broadcast included interviews with some of the 2024 Finalists. Proteas Women young prodigy Karabo Meso, is a finalist in the School Sport Star of the Year. Meso was elated to get that all-important call that she’s a gsport finalist.

Former footballer and now PR guru, Indira Albuquerque, is a finalist in the Woman in PR & Sponsorship. She was there as well filled with so much pride as she celebrates another career milestone.

Another highlight of the announcement was former Squash National Youth Champion Awande Malinga sharing the stage with her dad, Celumusa, who has shortlisted as a finalist in the 2024 Supporter of the Year award category.

Malinga Junior is a former winner on the gsport stage, she won the Public Choice award in 2020, bestowed on the Finalist who gains the most votes each Awards season without winning their category.

Now, the tables have turned, with Mr Malinga taking the stage. Awande’s dad has been the solid support structure for his daughter throughout her school career, and it is this dedication that has earned him the recognition he is due. On the broadcast, Malinga encouraged dads to show up for their daughters.

The special broadcast ended with a cutting of the cake as gsport celebrates its 18th birthday this year. A sweet way to end a proud day of celebration.

The announcement being live also took this year’s awards campaign levels higher, because after that, Finalists and their support structures filled social media with calls for votes. You can feel the enthusiasm and vibe as we edge closer to awards day.
