by | Dec 21, 2019

The International Cricket Council recently announced the Women’s T20I Team of the Year which featured South African cricketers, Shabnim Ismail and Lizelle Lee. With the ladies having made the list, fast-bowler Ismail expressed her gratitude and hopes that this achievement will go on to inspire the next generation of Proteas Women players.

Speaking exclusively to gsport after the announcement was made, Ismail pointed out that her hard work has started to pay off.

“I’m very happy and honoured to be named with the best cricketers in the world. I’ve been working extremely hard on being one of the best bowlers and all my hard work has definitely been paying off.”

“May this achievement go on to inspire more ladies to take up the sport of cricket.” Cricket South Africa Media Manager, Koketso Gaofetoge on Shabnim Ismail and Lizelle Lee’s inclusion in the ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year.

When asked about how this feat that both her and Lee have been able to achieve will empower the next generation, Ismail says, “I hope that myself and Lizelle Lee would show the young generation that women are capable of so much more. Inspire them to want to make a career out of it and be role models for them, both on and off the field.”

Women’s cricket in South Africa has elevated over the years with more local cricketers getting the opportunity to ply their trade in various countries as we witnessed the South African’s playing among the best in the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia recently.

Speaking on behalf of Cricket South Africa, Media Manager, Koketso Gaofetoge pointed out that the federation are proud of the achievements of Ismail and Lee and hopes that it will go on to inspire more women to take up the sport.

“It’s a great achievement for both the ladies and something that Cricket South Africa is extremely proud of. May this achievement go on to inspire more ladies to take up the sport of cricket,” Gaofetoge ended.
