JVW FC kicked off weekend’s Hollywoodbest Super League action with a 1 – 0 home win against the University of Western Cape at the UJ Soweto Campus at 7pm on Friday 15 March, and the evening’s cool powered the Gauteng team off the bottom of the leaderboard with their first win of the season.
Tanna Hollis scored for the home team from open play to break the deadlock after a nervous 80 minutes, and the goal celebrations that followed showed how much their return to form meant to the team in the live televised match.
The weekend’s action resumed with six matches kicking off at 3pm on Saturday, with City Lads, TS Galaxy Queens, the University of Pretoria and Copperbelt Ladies FC all securing away wins on the road, with just Richmond United and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies securing maximum points on home ground in the day’s results.
Sundowns Ladies continue their log-leading standings with a clean sheet and two to the good when Chuene Morifi (8′) and Cimone Sauls (13) handed them the early advantage, the win lifting them clear of the chasing back lead by Copperbelt Ladies FC and Richmond United, each tied on 7 points from their three outings to date.
Richmond FC hosted TUT Matsatsantsa at Merino Park in De Aar and were quickly 1-0 in the lead through a conversion by Mpho Bloem (10’), and there was no relief despite the visitors’ Nkateko Nkhuna levelling scores soon after the second half resumed play, the matter put beyond doubt when Michelle Sampson closed scoring 2-1 in Richmond’s favour in the 88th minute.
One of the most impressive individual performances of the weekend was Inge Kaba’s hattrick for Tuks in their away fixture against Lindelani Ladies, who took an early lead when Mbalenhle Tenza netted for the home side to open scoring in the 7th minute.
Any early celebrations were soon set back when Kaba responded with three first-half goals for the University of Pretoria to enjoy a 3-1 half-time lead, which would be the final match result after a goalless second half which was uneventful other than for Khanyisile Sokhela’s red card, the first of the tournament’s early season.
Copperbelt Ladies FC have also been impressive in the early season results, and their Saturday away match against the University of Fort Hare at the Davidson Stadium in Alice followed the pattern, two goals securing maximum points in the Copperbelt Ladies’ 2-1 win.
Another notewothy performance on the road was put in when City Lads overwhelmed Thunderbirds Ladies at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London on Saturday, for their first win after two season-opening draws. Bonolo Thameng opened scored her first in the sixth minute, and her lead was maintained until Aphelele Mpambani converted in the 79th minute for a 2-goal cushion. Home keeper Boitumelo Mmolotsi will be ruing her 89th minute own-goal, and a late goal by Anati Yose was slim consulation for the Birds.
With Human Rights Day set to be commemorated on Thursday 21 March, the football fraternity scheduled Hollywoodbets Super League fixtures starting with City Lads hosting TS Galaxy Queens in Wednesday’s 3pm kick off at the Isac Wolson Stadium in PE, followed by all teams in action across the nation on Thursday, with a full weekends fixtures awaiting on Sunday.
