Cricket Scotland Women’s team wrote their names into the history books when they beat Ireland by 8 wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium to qualify for their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup, in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, 5 May, 2024.
After years of hard work and so-near yet so-far moments in the World Cup Qualifiers, the reality that the Scots had finally qualified allowed tear-filled celebrations to reverberate all around the stadium, and back home in Scotland.
Kathryn Bryce’s match winning performance of 4/8 with the ball and 35* with the bat spearheaded her team’s advancement to the cricket spectacle, to be held in Bangladesh in October this year.
The moment of triumph was even more special as Bryce hit the winning runs alongside her sister, Sarah.
Scotland did not have an easy draw in their qualification, they won against Uganda by a whopping 109-runs, only to lose by a massive 10-wickets to the inform and power-hitting Sri Lankan side in their very next game.
Bryce jumped back in the saddle and led her team in all departments to beat the United States by 44 runs, and Thailand by 6 wickets, to set up a sensational semi-final in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifying tournament.
Speaking to media after the match, Bryce could not contain her excitement at what they achieved, “Its unbelievable, I feel we have worked hard for so long and we have had our share of disappointments.”
“To finally get over the line, it makes me well up every time I start thinking about it. We are going to a World Cup.”
Scotland’s ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier Heroine, Kathryn Bryce
“It has been a dream of mine just like everyone else here, to go and play at the highest level for your country is unbelievable,” said Bryce.
