“Thank you for all the support from my teammates, family and sponsors.” – New South African and African record holder in the 50m breaststroke category, Lara van Niekerk
“A special thank you to @eugenedaponte for all the hard work and dedication towards my training.”
In September, van Niekerk grabbed headlines for her outstanding performances at the SA Short Course Championships as she claimed three A-Qualifying times for all three breaststroke events, at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi.
At the championships in Pietermaritzburg, she became the first-ever South African female swimmer to delve under 30 seconds, when she threw down a massive 29.85 to win gold in the 50m breaststroke event and broke the previous-standing record of her role model, Tatjana Schoenmaker.
The 18-year-old will be eager to build on her recent success, as she sets her sights on representing South Africa at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
