Rising umpire, Lauren Agenbag, and match referee, Shandre Fritz, feature among new personnel announced as match officials for the second season of the Betway SA20 round-robin stage, to begin in Gqeberha on 10 January, 2024.
The league’s commitment to promoting diversity across all levels of the game has been illustrated with the promotion of SA’s first female umpire, Lauren Agenbag, to the umpires’ panel.
Agenbag is a trailblazer in the umpiring world after the 26-year-old also became the first woman to be appointed to the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Elite Umpires Panel in June 2023. These officials oversee all senior provincial domestic matches.
Agenbag comes with a well-decorated resume and is fast making a name for herself and pushing the gender barrier in cricket.
She was the youngest to have officiated an international match after having made her debut as a 22-year-old in a T20I between South Africa and Sri Lanka, in 2019.
Lauren stood in the ICC Women’s World Cup final officiating the showpiece of the 2021 50-over women’s event in New Zealand between Australia and England.
Former Proteas Women’s international Shandre Fritz will be among the Match Referees. Fritz is another female that pushes that boundary of gender equality in sport.
She along with Agenbag were part of the historic first-ever all-female panel of match officials for the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup, that was held in South Africa in February 2023.
