Cricket history has been made in Malaysia as 15 National women’s team members have been awarded contracts, creating a new era for gender equality in the sport.

The contracts will give the women players a fair opportunity to take up cricket as a full-time profession where they will also receive medical insurance, welfare and educational funds.

The allowance for each recipient will be based on the grades that they have been categorized in.

“I am grateful to receive this contract. In return, it makes me want to uphold professionalism at all times and give my all to the game. Here on, there will be no time to relax. We, as a team need to be the best we can be,” said national team captain, Winifred Duraisingam.

Teammate, Mas Elysa, echoed her captain’s sentiments, saying, “The contract has certainly created a sense of eagerness and urgency to further improve my game and remain at the top. As much as I do not want to fall in my grade, I want to see more players work hard and receive contracts, as it will make a difference to them as it has to me.”

The Malaysian women’s cricket team are currently in training and working towards securing a spot at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Given, the marked improvements, and previous achievements in tournaments such as the inaugural Belt Road tournament, Malaysian cricket has faith in the women’s team to deliver their best and for more players to be awarded contracts.
