Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC have clinched the 2025 Hollywoodbets Super League title with games to play, defending their title with a massive +72 goal difference after 24 wins from 28 fixtures and an unbeaten streak in 15 of their most recent matches.
The Pretoria-based team have now won their sixth consecutive title, solidifying their place as the best women’s football team in South Africa with a haul of eight titles in the competition’s 16 years. Palace Super Falcons are the next best with three titles in the league’s early 2010-2012 years.
Godfrey Sapula’s team has been nothing short of sensational in the 2025 season, having suffered only two losses in mid-July ties against JVW FC and Royal AM, respectively, and Refilwe Tholakele is among the top goal scorers, having netted 13 goals so far this season, while the team’s shot-stoppers have been beaten only seven times.

Season after season, the team has displayed football excellence, showing they are the leading women’s football team not just in South Africa but also on the continent, and the coach was full of praise for his team, who credited their work ethic as one of the biggest reasons they were able to tighten their grip on another title.
“I am extremely proud of the team. They showed character, discipline, and a winning mentality throughout the season. Every player committed to the vision, and their hard work is what brought us here.”
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC Coach, Godfrey Sapula
“This season has been a journey of consistency and growth. We faced tough challenges, but the players responded with maturity. It was a season defined by teamwork, resilience, and a strong desire to uphold the club’s winning culture,” Sapula continued.
“Honestly, the entire squad contributed, and I usually don’t like to single out players. However, Refilwe Tholakele deserves special mention. To come back from a 10-month injury layoff and score 14 goals in 16 matches is truly remarkable.”

Sundowns Ladies are known as a talent-studded team boasting star players in every position, and the danger for perennial winners comes when complacency slips in, but coach Sapula commends the team for learning important lessons this year.
“We learned the importance of maintaining focus in every match, and never taking any opponent for granted. We also learnt the value of depth in the squad, managing player fitness, and keeping a strong mindset even when under pressure.”
When asked how the coach continues to keep the team motivated with the title won, he refers to the fruits of hard work: “We remind the players that at Sundowns, our standard is excellence.”
“Winning the title doesn’t mean we relax; it means we push even harder to honour the badge. Motivation comes from pride, professionalism, and the responsibility to represent the club at the highest level.”

Sapula has been with the team since he took over from then coach Jerry Tshabalala earlier this year and says he was focused on maintaining the club’s winning mindset and high playing standards.
“It was extremely important. I knew I was joining a team with a strong legacy, so my role was to protect that culture and build on it. From day one, we focused on reinforcing our style, maintaining discipline, and ensuring we remained competitive across all matches.”
“It’s the culture. The club has a clear philosophy, a strong work ethic, and high expectations. The support structure is incredible, from management to technical staff and players. Everyone understands the responsibility of playing for this badge, and that commitment drives our success,” he said.
While this season’s victory has been wrapped up, there will certainly be talk of next season’s title challenge, seeing that the team has won the title since the inception of the competition’s sponsorship. Sapula says there is no doubt his team will work hard to continue their unbeaten run.

“We will absolutely work for it! There is no sense of entitlement, but our ambition remains unchanged: to compete, improve, and challenge for every trophy. If we stay focused and hungry, a seventh title is certainly within reach.”
