They have done it again! Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have won yet another trophy, beating TS Galaxy Queens 1-0 to reign supreme in the Hollywoodbets Super League at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, on Wednesday, 6 December 2023.
A goal by Andisiwe Mgcoyi in the 45th minute was enough to retain the crown for the third consecutive season.
“Credit must go to the girls, they fight and they fight for one another, they showed that they are the champions and they showed their championship mentality today.”
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Coach, Jerry Tshabalala
Sundowns Ladies went into the match on a seven-game unbeaten league run. Wednesday’s result took them to 75 points which made them level with UWC who lead the standings, however Masandawana’s superior goal difference was enough to see them take the title.
Yesterday’s victory means that Jerry Tshabalala’s team are now treble winners having recently won the CAF women’s Champions League as well as the Cosafa Women’s Champions League (CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers). This season’s clean sweep means they have completed the treble twice in three years, showing just how they have dominated women’s soccer in South Africa as well as the continent.
Sundowns Ladies were also celebrated for their fantastic season at the recent gsport 2023 Newsmakers of Year event held last week, as they are simply bossing it on the pitch.
Speaking on SABC Sport’s X page, Tshabalala spoke about how his team are fighters and showed their winning mentality on Wednesday.
“We are the only team in team in the league that is playing close to 40 plus games, when you take into consideration the we have played in the CAF Women’s Champions League as well as the Cosafa Women’s Champions League. Fatigue will creep in and you can tell by the number of injuries we have picked up, but we had to solider on with what we have.
On Sundowns Ladies returned to South Africa after their CAF Women’s Champions League win in November, Tshabalala shared that his team would be going for another treble haul, having completed the feat back in 2021. He kept to that promise and says it’s the least he can do after the fantastic support he and the team have received from the club.
“I promised Masandawana that the trophies will come back, all the trophies are back at Chloorkop and I am excited and happy. It shows we worked hard as a technical team. Credit must go to the management team and the support that they have given to us. It’s been amazing and this is how we can reward them.”
The season will come to a close with UWC finishing second, JVW FC in third place, and TS Galaxy Queens round off the top four.
On the other end of the table, it was a season to forget for both Ma-Indies Ladies and Coal City Wizards, who have been relegated to the Sasol League. The Limpopo-based team managed just two wins the entire season finishing this campaign with just 8 points. Meanwhile, Coal City Wizards amassed a mere 17 points, falling three points short of safety.
