Maties and UJ Progress to Varsity Women’s Rugby Final

Maties are set to face UJ in the FNB Varsity Women’s Rugby final, after the Maroon Machines defeated UFH in the second semi-final at UWC Sports Stadium on Thursday, 6 April 2023.

Maties led from the start when Lara Schats scored a quick try in the 9th minute of the game, however her try was not converted by Elmé Kruger making the score 5-0.

In the 16th minute, Maties captain Bianca Augustyn scored the second try that was converted by Kruger to take their score to 19-0.

In the 39th minute of the game, Maties’ Elitha Sylvester outran the Baby Blues defenders for a 70metre try just before halftime, but the conversion was missed by Kruger.

At halftime the ladies in maroon led the match 24-0.

In the 60th minute, Baby Blues’ Ongeziwe Msengi scored the first and only try for her team that was converted by Zanele Touto.

Sylvester went on to bag her second try in the 70th minute, which was then converted by Kruger. Maties went on to win the match 33-7 and set up a final encounter against UJ on Thursday, 13 April.
