Mentoor 9th in Richest Race

Champion marathon athlete, Farwa Mentoor, has finished 9th in a time of 3 hours and 12 minutes in the first leg of the Women’s Team Challenge category at the 2006/07 Standard Chartered Bank $1.5m Greatest Race on Earth in Nairobi on Sunday, October 29.

The Women’s Team Challenge was won by a Kenyan runner in a time of 2 hours 33 minutes, followed by a Chinese runner in a time of 2 hours and 37 minutes.

Mentoor braved hot and overcast conditions to cross the finish line slightly slower that her goal of a sub 3 hour marathon.

However, her top 10 finish puts the South African team in a good position for the second leg of the gruelling, four-leg relay marathon to be contested by SA running legend Elana Meyer in Singapore on the 3rd of December 2006.

The winning team is calculated on the cumulative finishing times of the four athletes each of whom runs one leg.

The Women’s Team Challenge category being contested by 15 international teams carries cash prizes totalling $200 000. The South African team is also eligible for the Performance Awards category with prize money of $55 000.

Standard Chartered’s Greatest Race on Earth features cash prizes in four categories totalling $1,5 million, making it the most lucrative race in world athletics. A total of 80 teams drawn from 30 countries are participating in this year’s Race.

The second leg will be contested by team-mate, Elana Meyer, in Singapore on December 3.  Pretoria-based athletes Louisa Leballo and Gloria Baeba will contest the third and final legs of Standard Chartered’s Greatest Race on Earth: Leballo the Mumbai course on January 21 and Baeba the Hong Kong event on March 4.
