South African tennis aces Kgothatso Montjane and Chanel Simmonds won singles titles in their respective categories on the last day of the 2019 SA Spring Open to give the home fans plenty to celebrate in Johannesburg.
South Africa’s leading wheelchair tennis ace and US Open doubles finalist Kgothatso Montjane clinched the title with a final victory over Japanese second seed Shiori Funamizu.
The world number five Montjane claimed a 6-3 6-1 win over the Japanese second seed in a match which showcased the best of women’s tennis.
The able-bodied final saw Chanel Simmonds storm to her first title at Ellis Park with a ruthless straight-sets 6-0 6-1 victory over eighth-seeded Tina Smith of Australia.
