Kenya’s Nancy Jelagat held off Ethiopia’s Etagegne Woldu and Beyenu Degefa to win the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Marathon race on Sunday, 5 December in Valencia, Spain.

Fresh from setting a half-marathon record in Berlin, Jelagat together with Woldu and Degefa ran closer to the pacemakers. When she noticed the Ethiopian pair could no longer match the pacemakers, she quickly pulled away from the rest of the field.

After an impressive half of 1:09:41 and 1:09:50, Jelagat crossed the line in 2:19:31 to win her first major marathon.

Speaking to the media after the race, Jelagat was elated with her performance. “It was my first time here in Valencia, but I promise to come back,” she said.
