Despite the team loss, Maweni will be proud of her personal achievement, having joined Lightning a season ago.
Her netball career began at the age of 29 – a period where most athletes are at their peak or preparing for retirement.
As a late bloomer on the scene, Maweni has achieved what many can’t in a lifetime.
Back home she has played for the Kingdom Stars and Southern Stings in the South African Brutal Fruit Netball Cup.
She has also played several seasons in England’s Netball Superleague, first for the Loughborough Lightning and later for the Severn Stars.
The now 36-year-old’s exceptional form in the local South African league led to former national team coach, Norma Plummer calling on her to be signed by foreign clubs in higher profile leagues.
She has featured for the South Africa national netball team on several occasions, most notably in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool.
