South Africa have officially qualified for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals! The confirmation came through during the change of innings, securing the Proteas’ place in the knock-out rounds.

The Proteas found themselves as the third contender in the final Group B match between England and West Indies, with their semi-final fate hanging on the result of the game between the two teams in Dubai on Tuesday, 15 October 2024.

It was a statistician’s challenge leading into the match: Three teams with only two advancing. England, on six points after three straight wins, would secure their place with a victory, leaving the West Indies out.

A narrow West Indies win, however, would have seen all three teams finish on six points, with South Africa potentially missing out on net run rate.

Thankfully for Proteas fans, those complications dissolved when it was confirmed that South Africa had secured their spot in the semi-finals. This marks their fourth overall appearance in the knockouts and their third consecutive ICC Women’s T20 Cup semi-final.

South Africa’s best finish came in 2023 when they were runners-up, losing to Australia in their first-ever World Cup final.
