One of South Africa’s top road and track athletes, Rene Kalmer will be seen in action at the inaugural Durban leg of the Totalsports Ladies Race that will take place at Kingspark Athletics Stadium on Sunday, 31 July 2011.
Earlier this year Kalmer, representing the Nedbank Running Club, qualified for the World Championship when she finished fifth in her first international marathon in Prague. According to Kalmer, she enjoys both the long and short distances.
“Up until last year I specialised in the 1500m, but this year I started focussing more on marathons,” said Kalmer. “I still have a lot to learn, but I am really excited by the new challenge. I’ll be using the Totalsports Ladies Race in Durban and Stellenbosch as a test to see whether my marathon training for the World Championship is up to schedule.”
“The World Champs will take place in Daegu, South Korea from 27 August until 04 September,” continued Kalmer. “I am competing on the first day and am really excited as it will be the first time in a decade that a ladies team will be representing South Africa in the marathon.
“It will also be great experience for next year’s Olympic Games in London. I’m looking forward to taking part at the Totalsports Ladies Race. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Women’s Day, because it is all about the ladies on this day.”
Kalmer will face tough competition from fellow World Marathon Champs team member and long-distance athlete, Tanith Maxwell. “Although my main focus has always been on marathons, I love competing over the 10km and 21km distance,” said Maxwell.
“I am currently in training for the World Athletics Championship in Daegu, Korea where I will be running in the marathon event. I think having a race that is dedicated to ladies and is held in conjunction with women’s day is fantastic.
“The atmosphere that this kind of event provides can only help develop running as a sport amongst woman and in general help to promote a healthy lifestyle for woman in all walks of life,” says Maxwell.
The Totalsports Ladies Race is both proud and excited to welcome the Nedbank Green Mile to its 2011 Women’s Day celebration. Spanning over a section of the Totalsports Ladies Race route, the Nedbank Green Mile will be a hive of excitement with runners and walkers receiving en route support from the likes of musicians, cheerleaders, dancers and more. Walkers, joggers and runners of all ages are invited to be part of the celebration. Early entries will receive an official race T-shirt compliments of Totalsports and Nedbank, while medals will be awarded to all finishers.
