South Africa earned a win in their final match of Day 1 at the Fast5 World Netball Series in Christchurch 2023 against Jamaica, after earlier losses to England and Australia in fast-paced the six-nation competition at the Christchurch Arena from 11-12 November, 2023.

The South Africans got a commendable 33-17 win over Jamaica to finish off the first day’s fixtures, which didn’t start well with an opening fixture 37-26 loss to England.

England dominated the game with the South Africans only outscoring their opponents in the third quarter, and going on to lose by 11 goals.

The Australia Challenge

South Africa then faced defending champions Australia in a much a tighter affair, and with South Africa having just played a 3-Test Netball series against Australia, their experience against the world champions showed in their second match result.

The two teams were close in terms of goals in each quarter but South Africa managed to outscore Australia in the second quarter by seven goals. However the win wasn’t meant to be with the Aussies taking the 32-38 victory at the whistle.

SA Form Against Jamaica

The last game of the day for South Africa went much better, earning a big 33-17 win over Jamaica. South Africa were on top in three of the four quarters, but the Jamaicans fought back in Q4, although it was a little too late for the island nation to turn their fortunes around.

“I think we have gained our confidence and got combinations right with every game that we played today. This win is very important for us because it shows that we are doing something right, we are taking the lessons from every match and applying what we are learning and what we planned on doing on the day. So ja, this win is important!”

The African nation then followed up their first loss with another, this time against Jamaica, where they went down 41-37.

Malawi’s bad fortunes were compounded when they were handed their third defeat of the day as England secured a 41-30 victory.

The days action ended with hosts New Zealand suffering their first defeat as their trans-Tasmanian neighbours Australia beat them 38-29.
