The Emerging SA Women’s Sevens team assembles on Friday in Port Elizabeth for a final training camp ahead of the 2008 USA Women’s International Rugby Tournament, from 9 – 10 February in San Diego, California.
This will be the second training camp for the squad this month, after its successful training sessions on 11 – 13 January in Stellenbosch. An enlarged group of 20 players also took part in the annual Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens Tournament last December.
A squad of twelve players will get together at noon on Friday, and will do their training at the UPE campus grounds. On Saturday the squad will undergo a series of contact sessions against the Brandwag High School team in Uitenhage.
The San Diego tournament will offer the team the ideal opportunity to test its readiness against international competition, as it will be competing against the likes of the USA, Canada, Kazakhstan, China, Australia and New Zealand.
Denver Wannies, coach of the Emerging SA Women’s Sevens team, said his players are looking forward to the tournament in the United States. "The players are all in good shape, and excited about the prospects of international competition," explained Wannies.
