SA Sport Stars Share Tips For Sponsorship Success

South African sports stars, Suné Luus, Erin Hunter and Babalwa Latsha, are showing that a strong brand presence can attract the right attention, as they secure attractive brand partnerships and contract renewals during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The trio are some of the leading women’s sport athletes, who are working harder than ever on their brands, to ensure greater success in securing sponsors.

May has been incredible for the South African national representatives as seasoned Momentum Proteas player, Luus and women’s hockey captain, Hunter, signed brand partnership with leading brands, while Latsha’s contract with Eibar Women’s Rugby club in Spain was renewed for another season.

So, what is the secret to their sponsorship success?

Despite the ongoing global COVID-19 lockdown that has kept all live sporting action on hold, Luus, who is the new Brand Ambassador for Falke SA – a technical sports retailer – believes that it is vital to use this time to post good content to show brands that you are still active.

“It definitely isn’t easy in lockdown, I guess by still posting good content you show brands that you’re still active and can make a difference.

“If they feel like you are really interested in the brand and want to help grow it, they will not think twice about having you on board.” – Momentum Proteas all-rounder, Suné Luus

“If you really love a product or a brand you have to speak to the right person and give a great proposal. The proposal seals the deal. If they feel like you are really interested in the brand and want to help grow it, they will not think twice about having you on board.”

Hunter, who has become the first South African Brand Ambassador for Scorrd Hockey, echoed Luus’ statement, also emphasising the importance of continuing to fight to achieve the goals set before the global pandemic struck.

“I think the best way to stay motivated during this crazy time, is to remember your goals, and know that those goals still exist even during lockdown. Try and get into a routine but also allow yourself to have bad days. It’s all about moving forward one day at a time.”

“What makes our brands are our performances, our involvement and competition in the relevant sporting codes that we partake in and now that has been taken away, so, I think it is very important to make use of tools such as social media and the like to keep our brands fresh and relevant.” – Springbok Women’s captain, Babalwa Latsha

Springbok Women’s rugby captain, Latsha, continues to lead the way on the international rugby scene and says

“I think that, among other things, what makes our brands are our performances, our involvement and competition in the relevant sporting codes that we partake in and now that has been taken away, so, I think it is very important to make use of tools such as social media and the like to keep our brands fresh and relevant.

“I think it’s also important to get involved in projects and programmes that are conducive to the building of your brand as an athlete off of the field. Those things are important in building a brand and also keeping ourselves relevant within the greater scheme of things,” Latsha concluded.
