Women’s sport in South Africa continues to break new barriers, and the ladies who play Kho Kho are a prime example of this, the team from Mzansi taking part in and making it all the way to the Semi-Finals of the first-ever Kho Kho World Cup at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, India, from 13 to 19 January, 2025.

The SA women’s team reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners and tournament hosts India, on Saturday, 18 January.

What is this sport called Kho Kho? Well, it’s basically a version of the game played by children all over the world. According to the Olympics.com site, the origins of the sport are difficult to pinpoint. It said that evidence of the sport was mentioned in the Mahabharata epic.

Back to the present day: The objective of Kho Kho is to hunt down opponents to score points, with participants bound by a set of rules common in the indigenous Indian sport.

The South African Kho Kho team put their skills on show, going unbeaten in the group stage of the World Cup, first with a 56-26 win against New Zealand, then a resounding 99-16 victory over Peru, before getting the better of Poland 78-2, and finally overcoming Indonesia 114-12 in their group match to top Group D.

They progressed to the knockout stages where they secured a narrow 51-46 win over fellow-African side Kenya. Next up was their semi-final against the hosts and stalwarts of the game, India, who proved to be too tough of an opponent for South Africa, the eventual tournament champions overcoming the SA women’s team 66-16.
