Guinness World Record holder and elite endurance athlete, Sarah Ferguson, will swim from Durban to Cape Town to raise awareness for plastic pollution at the #OneOceanSwim event.
Ferguson, who is also a physiotherapist, is passionate about the ocean and believes in being authentic to bring about change.
Speaking to gsport, she explains the importance of the event.
“The swim from Durban to Cape Town is my most challenging event undertaken to date and is scheduled to commence from Monday, 21 February 2022.
“The plan is to highlight the issue of plastic pollution, predominately single use or throw away plastic as well as highlight other serious conservation issues from turtle and shark conservation, water pollution and seismic drilling,” she added.
“We aim to highlight what local organisations are doing to protect these areas as well as encourage communities and individuals to change their consumer behaviour one decision at a time to live a more sustainable life.”
Ferguson reveals that funding has been hard to come by for the event and encourages the public to make donations to Breathe Conservation to support the work that she is doing to create a plastic free ocean (www.breatheconservation.org).
She further explains the importance of protecting the ocean: “The event was brought about by the ever-growing issues our coastlines are facing. I have always used my love and talent of ocean swimming to highlight the importance of protecting it.
“In lockdown I was forced to look hard at what I could do and figure out what better statement to make than in my own back yard essentially swimming from my current home (Durban) to where I grew up (Cape Town). With the Covid pandemic, the single use plastic has risen to exponential levels along with the KZN riots which created serious chemical spills. Now more than ever, I want to use my voice and talent to speak up for the future generations,” she concluded.
