Athletics South Africa has welcomed the start of the international Athletics Season in earnest, as among South Africa’s top athletes were in action in Osaka, Japan; Gabarone, Botswana; and Uberlandia, Brasil.
Estie Wittstock ran a season’s best of 52.53sec to win the 400m at the CAA Permit Meeting in Gaborone, finishing ahead of Zambia’s Rachel Nachula.
Earlier the two had reversed roles in the 200m, with the Zambian coming up trumps.

I ran my best time in the 400m since last May in Osaka (51.05), so I’m really pleased”, said Wittstock afterwards.
Lebogang Phalula was too strong in the 800m, powering away to a 2:08;63 win over Zambia’s Rebecca Nachula (2:12;30).
The winning streak was in the family as twin sister Lebo Phalula was to good for Zambia’s Elizet Banda, winning the 1500m in 4:23;36
On the other side of the world, Geraldine Pillay finished 7th in the Jamaica International 200m on Saturday, with a time of 24.27sec, the race won by USA’s Rachelle Boone Smith (22.65sec).
Pillay is adapting to the new training regime of coach Steven Francis, who is also training World Record Holder Asafa Powell, and improved performances are expected of her in a year’s time.
