Semenya and Xaba Refocus on Africa Champs for Olympics Qualification

by | May 29, 2021

South Africa’s track and field superstars, Caster Semenya and Glenrose Xaba pulled off a tightly contested performance at the BackTrack Newton Classic Qualifier in Durban on Friday, 28 May 2021.

Gold medalist Semenya smashed her 5000m Personal Best, shaving precious seconds off best best time to cross the finish line in 15:32.14, while Xaba came in second in a time of 15:38.56.

In a setback for their Tokyo Olympic champaigns, both performances clocked outside of the 15:10.00 qualifying time set for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

For Semenya, this was her second bid to qualify for the Games, after clocking 15:52.28 at the Sizwe Medical Fund ASA Senior Track and Field Championships in April.

On the other hand, the double Olympic champions protégé, Xaba, has been in red hot form this year, smashing her personal best in the 5000m at the AGN Track and Field Championships and further went on to stamp her authority retaining her SA Half Marathon title.

The ladies will be eager to run a qualifying time at the African Continental Championships as the International Olympic Committee has set 29 June as the qualification deadline for athletes wanting to participate in Japan.
