In the world of cricket, there’s nothing more exciting than spotting young talent on the rise. Leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu is one such star. Representing the SA U-19 and Hollywoodbets Dolphins Senior Women’s team, she has now earned a place in the Proteas Women’s team for the 2024 ICC T20 Women’s World Cup in the UAE.
Naidu’s call-up to the Proteas marks a major milestone in her career, fresh off the team’s T20I series win against Pakistan. The young cricketer is eager to make an impression. “Being included in the squad is a huge step for my career. I can’t wait to contribute and make an impact in the senior team,” she says.
One of the highlights of Naidu’s journey so far has been receiving her cap from her cricket idol, Sune Luus. “I’ve always looked up to Sune growing up. Receiving my cap from her was incredible,” Naidu recalls fondly. She also celebrated her first international senior wicket, dismissing Pakistan’s Sadaf Shams in the opening T20I. “The whole team was thrilled for me. Their support made the moment even more special.”
Naidu’s love for cricket began early, with the strong support of her family. She spent countless hours perfecting her skills and soon stood out in junior leagues, catching the eye of coaches and selectors alike. It wasn’t long before she started representing South Africa at major tournaments, including the inaugural ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup and the 2024 Africa Games.
Reflecting on those experiences, Naidu says, “It showed me different perspectives on life. We didn’t win gold at the Africa Games, but it taught us the importance of working harder for next time. I’m excited to make my mark in Africa.”
Despite being one of the youngest players on many of her teams, Naidu has always embraced the challenge of playing alongside more experienced athletes. “It can be intimidating, but I focus on listening to my coaches and following their advice, which changes my mindset and helps me stay grounded,” she explains.
Juggling school and cricket has not been easy, but Naidu is determined to pursue her goal of becoming a professional cricketer. “It’s about dreaming big and overcoming the challenges,” she says with conviction.
Much of her growth as a cricketer has been shaped by the unwavering support of her parents and her long-time mentor, SA U-19 Head Coach Dinesha Devnarain. “Coach Dee has been coaching me since I was nine years old. From KFC Mini Cricket to the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Senior Women’s team, she and my parents have believed in me every step of the way. Their support has shaped me into the cricketer I am becoming,” Naidu says.
One of her proudest moments so far has been winning the inaugural CSA Women’s Professional One Day Cup with the Dolphins Women’s side, an achievement that earned her a contract for the upcoming season. With an exciting 2024/2025 season ahead, she’s determined to make the most of every opportunity.
Naidu credits her success to discipline and a commitment to goal-setting. “Discipline and goal-setting are essential. I’ve had to make many sacrifices along the way, but it’s been worth it,” she says. When she’s not on the field, Naidu enjoys spending time with her family, especially fishing with her dad and brothers, or hitting a few golf balls at the driving range to unwind.
As the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup approaches, Naidu is feeling the nerves, but she’s also focused on learning and improving. With her passion, dedication, and undeniable talent, Seshnie Naidu is on her way to becoming a standout force in South African women’s cricket, inspiring young girls to follow their dreams with the same courage and determination.
