South Africa’s Simoné Kruger top performed on Day 1 and 2 of the 2022 Toyota South African Sports Association for Physically Disabled (SASAPD) National Championships at Germiston Stadium, which concluded on Sunday, 20 March.
Kruger, who was dubbed in gsport’s Women to Watch in 2022 article in December last year, has lived up to her billing as she broke the SA and African records in the Discus for Women F38.
On Day 2, Kruger built on her momentum as she broke the SA and African record, as well as a new PB in the Shot-Put Women F38 category.
Other top performances from the Championship included:
BLIND JUDO
Eastern Cape dominated in the women’s category, winning 3 gold medals – Lithalethu Mhiki claimed gold in the women’s open category, Siphosethu Kasha came in second and Inga Xhaya placed third.
Lisa Fakhanya Nzi and Sesona Xeng both claimed gold in their respective weight categories.
DISCUS
Mandeline Hoffman set a new African record in the women’s U20 discus (F44) with a 31.66m performance on her second throw of the competition.

Nigeria’s Nwachukwu Goodness set a new World Record in the F42 discus with her 33.35m heave.
PARA-CYCLING
Thuto Aaron, Zimkhitha Tshali and Sindi Hugo dominated in the 800m and 1500m tricycle races, claiming gold for their respective age categories, U/17, U/19 and U/21.
Paballo Mokgetla grabbed second place for U/21’s 800m and 1000m tricycle races.
U/17 and U/19 participants, Jenna-Leigh Pollock, and Ance Immelman, claimed first positions in the 1000m and 1500m bicycle races, respectively.
ATHLETICS
Louzanne Coetzee rose to the occasion, taking home 2 gold medals after she won placed first for the final all classes category in the 400m, 800m and 1500m races. Liezel Gouws grabbed second place for the 400m all classes final and Jana Kletnhans placed third.
GOALBALL
Free State’s junior and senior women’s teams were the stars of the show, winning all their goalball games.
On Day 1, Free State’s senior team took on Northern Cape, where they grabbed a walk in the park victory, winning 11 – 01. They continued with their winning streak on Day 2, beating Eastern Cape 18 – 8.
Free State’s junior team rose up to the challenge to meet the standard of their senior team, beating Gauteng 14 – 04 and 17 – 07 on days 1 and 2, respectively.
The Eastern Cape’s senior team beat Northern Cape in a closely contested match, ending in 09 – 07.
