2020 Momentum gsport Awards Volunteer of the Year winner, Siyabulela Loyilane, recently graduated from the inaugural COSAFA Women’s Leadership Programme and is looking forward to sharing her knowledge with the football community.
COSAFA hosted a six months course where 37 participants from all 14 member associations were recognised for completing the course on 18 October 2021.
Speaking on her achievement, Loyilane says: “It’s been months of learning from different experienced game changers in football and even recommended to be part of the programme was an honour on its own.
“We have had amazing women from the COSAFA Region and being selected as a Top Achiever in Leadership, not only affirms the belief that I was born to sharpen on my leadership skills and abilities.
“It has truly been an honour and I’m still in disbelief that a girl from Ngxwalane Location, in rural Eastern Cape, can have this honour and hope that soon the football gods will look my direction for me to get a real opportunity to prove my worth in football.”
Loyilane was recently appointed as Head of Women’s Football at the Midrand Local Football Association.
She shares three key factors that she learnt on the programme that can help other women in sport:
- The art of Marketing and Brand Management
- Networking has also been a key learning area as without establishing a network, it’s essentially difficult to know your worth
- Growing women’s football in the continent has also been key, and not just for athletes’ participation but all sectors that affect the beautiful game as it is important to ensure those are supported because without those, the game won’t happen. Development is key.
Apart from football, Loyilane proudly volunteered as a Rowing Official for this year’s Gauteng Rowing Regatta.
“The Regatta was amazing, it started off as me just being a rowing mom, my son introduced me to the sport and it has opened up my eyes to the sport and it has opened up my eyes to what rowing can do,
“Every single aspect of it requires discipline and I didn’t know the intensity of being an Official too. I worked in boat checking and it’s not as easy as it looks,” she added.
“I’m truly humbled and the support from the parents. I am definitely looking forward to the 2022 SA Champs and 2023 Masters Regatta hosted by South Africa. I now truly understand why it is an Olympic sport and would like to see more kids taking part in the sport,” she concluded.
