The women in Green and Gold began the friendly tournament with spectacular goals from Hilda Magaia of Moron BK in Sweden, Thembi Kgatlana of Atletico Madrid in Spain, and Sibulele Holweni of the University of the Western Cape.
Kgatlana, who scored the second goal in the match, said: “It’s always good to play top teams. We hadn’t played in a very long time (together in the national set-up), and we have a couple of overseas players who had to travel to join the team.
“We have a very long calendar, preparations for AWCON, the World Cup and the following year it’s the Olympics because of Covid everything is squeezed. So, getting a first match against Ghana, we had to prepare and make sure that we scored,” she added.
Social media showed their support as the South Africans prepare for their next match against hosts Nigeria on Tuesday, 21 September 2021.
