Springboks Walk China Sevens Day 1

The Springbok Women’s Sevens team secured a clean sweep on the opening day of the International Women’s Invitational Sevens in Zengcheng, Guangzhou, a warm-up tournament ahead of the inaugural IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.

Photo: Tanushree PillaySouth Africa scored pool-round wins over Kazakhstan, Thailand and the China B team on Saturday, racking up 114 points while conceding only 17 on their way to three clear wins, on day 1 of the Invitational.

The women’s BlitzBokke face Singapore Select in the first of their ranking matches, on Sunday.

The Invitational is a warm-up tournament ahead of the inaugural IRB Women’s Sevens World Series, with the first round of the IRB showpiece takes place in Dubai on 30 November and 1 December.

The tournament is expected to generate more interest in women’s rugby in China, who will host the third round of the inaugural IRB Women’s Sevens World Series in late March.

There is lots of excitement around the growth of the game, with Rugby Sevens scheduled to make its Olympic Games debut at Rio 2016.
