Marioné Fourie and Prudence Sekgodiso were the star performers on Day 4, bringing an exciting close to the ASA Senior Track and Field, Combined Events and Relays Championships powered by Jungle at Msunduzi Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 21 April 2024.
Fourie successfully defended her title in the women’s 100m hurdles final, crossing the finish line in 13.01 seconds. Kayla van den Berg grabbed the runner-up spot in 13.40 and Taylon Bieldt was third in 13.46, with Athletics Gauteng North sweeping the podium.
“I wanted to run faster but I think I can be happy with the time. I wanted to run 12.80 but it’s ok,” Fourie, the national record holder in her event, said afterwards. “I think I was a little too eager and I ran faster than I did at nationals last year.”
In the women’s 1 500m final, Sekgodiso earned her second medal of the week (after taking silver in the 5 000m), winning gold for the host province KwaZulu-Natal Athletics in 4:13.09.
Charné Swart of AGN, who won the 800m title earlier in the championship, finished second in 4:16.89, and Carina Viljoen secured bronze in the colours of Central Gauteng Athletics in 4:19.29.
“The race was amazing. It was tactical and it went according to plan,” Sekgodiso said.
“I have a calf problem (injury) but I just told myself that I’m going to ignore it and chase the gold medal. It wasn’t the fastest time but it was a good time, so I’m overwhelmed.”
