10,000m Defending champion
and national record holder record Tebogo Masehla leads the charge for the Beijing Olympics qualifier
at the Yellow Pages Senior National Championships in Stellenbosch on Friday.
Masehla will yet be under pressure from Myrette
Filmalter, who gave her a run for her money in Tshwane, and former national
record holder Nolene Conrad is also in the mix, and her challenge can’t be
discounted.
Meanwhile, Rene Kalmer is
the best bet for the first female long distance runner to qualify for the
Olympics, and her 4:09.80 effort to win the 1500m at the IAAF Grand Prix in Melbourne Australia
last month is an indication of her potential.
"I felt strong after winning
the 1500m in Melbourne,
and I think the Olympic qualifier is within my reach," Kalmer revealed after
her 1500m victory in Tshwane. "The previous day I had run 15:48 in 5000m.
"I had not had enough rest
after the long flight from South
Africa. So under better conditions, I can
better that time by a huge margin. I am entering both events in Stellenbosch,
as I feel there is a good chance of qualifying for the Olympic in both events."
