Overnight joint leader Lisa Holm Sorensen from Denmark won the Telkom Women’s Classic, and topped the Ladies African Tour 2008 Order of Merit at Zwartkop Country Club on Friday afternoon, after her overnight strategy for rain worked.

"Yes we had rain all night – it was perfect. I must say I did enjoy playing in some European weather today," exclaimed an elated Sorensen. She hit a very good drive off the 2nd tee to about fifty metres from the green, and her approach shot fell within a metre of the hole, from where she tapped in for the final day’s first birdie.

Due to heavy under foot conditions the Dane didn’t make the green in two on the par five 4th as she usually would, but she still managed to up and down for a further birdie, and on the par three 7th she safely hit the ball to the heart of the green, and then holed an eight-metre putt to go -3 under at the turn.

The 10th hole was Sorensen’s nemesis with bogeys on this hole in each round. With adrenalin pumping she hit her tee shot to the left of the green. She chipped from there to within a metre, but unfortunately her putt lipped out. She recovered with a birdie on the par five 11th hole. And then played it steady on the next three holes.

Having just got a shot back from fellow Dane Julie Tvede who had bogeyed the 14th, Sorensen didn’t wish to risk anything. She played to the centre of the green and made a brilliant put from there to claim her birdie on the 15th hole.

It was here when the nerves set in. Four shots clear of Tvede; Sorensen parred the 16th and 17th holes, and the final hole was even more exciting. Teeing off with her three wood, Sorensen hit a brilliant drive. Not one to play it safe, she then hit her five iron shot into the woods, but recovered to within forty metres of the green, and chipped up safely.

"My thoughts were now, take your two putts and take your bogey", said the nervous Sorensen. "So I nailed my putt – one and half metres past the pin!" Luckily she made the return to finish with a final round score of 69, -13 under par for the tournament and four shots clear of Sweden’s Maria Boden.

"My goal at the start of the Tour was to be the winner of the Order of Merit, so today’s win was in my plan", said an elated but relieved Champion who takes home just under R100,000 for her achievements on the local tour.

Sorensen leaves for Europe on Sunday to spend some well-earned time with her family, before commencing training for the European Team Cup where she will team up with Iben Tinning.

Boden scored a final round of 69, -11 under for the tournament, one-shot clear of Dane Julie Tvede. The leading South African after the day’s final round was Stacy Bregman, who a 70, -8 under par, six shots clear of leading amateurs Monique Smit and Marne Roos, with scores of 72 and 74 respectively.
