Stormin’ Strauss!

Bertine Strauss (NW), a shooting star and up-and-coming junior of only 14 years beat Kelli Shean (WP A) in singles match play in the first round of the Pick ‘n Pay Inter-Provincial Championship played at Germiston Golf Club.

Although Western Province A had a good win in the morning they could not stop the onslaught of North West who beat them 6 points to 3 points overall.

Southern Cape put on a brave fight against defending champions, Gauteng Lions in the morning foursomes round but could not stop their winning wave. The Lions beat them 7 points to 2 points.

Gauteng North A, who got knocked off their perch to the B division by Southern Cape, came out with all guns blazing against KwaZulu-Natal this morning, and beat them by one point this afternoon.

The Gauteng Cats took a leaf out of the Lion’s book, when the young guns tried to show the more experienced players of Boland A what they were made of, and eventually beat them by one – 5 points to 4 points.

In the C Division, Eastern Cape narrowly beat Free State & N. Cape by a half point. Western Province B beat Mpumulanga by 2 points.

Competition was even closer in the D Division, where Limpopo lost to Border by a half point and Boland B and Gauteng North B halved their games.

In the best round of the day in the qualifier played yesterday, Bertine Strauss (NW) shot five-under-par, 67.  Ashleigh Simon (Gau), a team member for the World Amateur Team Championship to be held in Cape Town during October, was one shot behind on 68.

Fabienne Haremze (SC), a promising young golfer shot a 70, while fellow WATC team mate, Kelli Shean (WP A) shot a 70.The qualifying round divided the provincial teams into four divisions, namely A, B, C and D.

The winners in each division play round robin matches of foursomes and singles, each team competes within their qualified division at Germiston Golf Club.
