Storms Postpone Novice Finals

Onshore winds gusting at over 40kph combined with intermittent showers and temperatures that plummeted to 9 degrees turned the waves at Muizenberg into a swirling mass of whitewater, and forced organisers to postpone the finals of the first Kahuna Surf Series event on Sunday.

The decision was further justified when a series of hailstorms passed over the Peninsula before the middle of the day, forcing the finals in the combined six categories to be staged at the start of the second event in the series, on the weekend of 27 & 28 October at Melkbosstrand.

"It was a no-win situation," said Dene Botha of the Kahuna Surfing Academy, who created the series of events to introduce competition surfing to novices, and provide Cape Town’s rising surf stars with contest experience.

"After the unreal surfing by the emerging stars and newcomers yesterday, to put them out in those kind of conditions would have turned the event into a lottery, and nobody would have gone home smiling."

The future surf stars posted outstanding scores on the opening day in solid one metre waves and two full rounds were completed, and the top four in each category will contest the finals, in which thousands of Rand’s worth of surf industry products are at stake.
