The South African women’s hockey team took a giant leap towards FIH Women Hockey World Cup qualification with a flawless performance hammering Kenya 4-0 as they qualified for their 7th consecutive Africa Cup of Nations final.
It was expected to be a tricky tie between the two nations but South Africa simply demolished the East African champions with a brace from Tarryn Lombard and a goal apiece from Quanita Bobbs and Charne Maddocks sealed the victory.
In the second semi-final, Elizabeth Opoku’s last-minute sucker punch for Ghana against Zimbabwe saw them book a spot in Sunday’s final against South Africa.
In the 5th to 8th classification matches, Namibia and Zambia played a 2-2 draw, but it was Namibia who emerged victorious after they won the penalty shootout 3-2.
QeenEsther Njoku, Alfa John, Nosirat Hammed and Benedicta Johnson each scored a goal as Nigeria outshined Uganda 4-0.
The final and third place playoffs are set for Sunday, 23 January.
