Trouble Looms for Lindelani and Thunderbirds as Fort Hare and Richmond Cruise to HBSL League Finals

The HBSL is approaching the business end and teams are chasing their best finish on the log standings as trouble looms for relegation-threatened Lindelani and Thunderbirds Ladies. The weekend’s big winners this week are Fort Hare in a surprise win over Tuks. Photo: Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies

Champions of the COSAFA CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifier the University of Western Cape are back home from Malawi and they made a winning return to the Hollywoodbets Super League, defeating First Touch Ladies 2-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Bongeka Gamede and Nondumiso Manengela scored the two goals for the Blues as they play catch up after missing some fixtures due to inter-club commitments.

UWC FC are aiming to close the gap between them and table toppers Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies. Thinasonke Mbuli’s side has played 3 games less than Sundowns and the defending champions enjoy a 12-point lead.

This past weekend Banyana Ba Style earned a slim 1-0 victory against TS Galaxy Queens, thanks to a goal in the 14th minute by Andisiwe Mgcoyi, to further cement their dominance in the HBSL.

Speaking to the Sundowns media team, Miche Minnies praised the team’s collective performance, saying, “It was truly a team effort out there today against a side that matched us pound for pound.

“Every single player gave their all and that is what made the difference. We again stuck to our game plan, supported each other and kept our focus until the final whistle. Our success is built on unity and hard work. We trust each other on and off the pitch and that is what drives us to perform at our best in every match.”

Shannon Macomo’s goal cancelled out Tanna Hollis 64th minutes strike producing a share of the spoils in one the most highly anticipated games of the weekend between JVW FC and University of Johannesburg.

On the log standings, the gap between the two sides is just 2 points with the Orange Army sitting in third place on 44, while the Bedfordview side have amassed 42 points.

Richmond United cruised past Thunderbirds Ladies and won 4-1 at the Merino Park in De Aar, Northern Cape. Dimakatso Seitlheko 19’, Peacemore Kenende 45’, Michelle Sampson 90’ and Mpho Bloem 90’ were all on song to seal the clinical performance against a side lingering dangerously on the relegation zone, at the bottom of the log.

Royal AM are back to winning ways, this week they put 3 goals past City Lads. This is Thwihli Thwala’s first win in 3 games. Next game is at home to Sundowns, a game they’ll be eager to win and stop the cruising Mamelodi train at its tracks.

In a battle of Universities, we were treated to a thrilling 5 goal-thriller that ended with University of Pretoria stunned by University of Fort Hare at the Davidson Stadium in Alice. Qaqamba Ngqangashe opened the account for Fort Hare 8 minutes in, S’bahle Ndlovu slotted in the equaliser in the 22nd, just before half-time (42’) Chantelle Esau pulled one back for the hosts.

As the game proceeded in the second stanza, Thato Mohlele said equalled matters in the 63rd but Kesha Hendricks said “We are not done yet!” and sealed an important win for the students from the Eastern Cape.

Fort Hare will now prepare for another University derby as they travel to TUT Matsatsantsa FC in the next clash on the 7th of September at 11:30. Matsatsantsa meanwhile were too good for Lindelani Ladies.

The KZN side remains in limbo as they find themselves fifteenth on the log standings with only one victory this season, and a possible trip back to the Sasol League seeming more like their next destination.
