South Africa’s Vuyisile Jaca created history along with her crew members when they sailed around the world in 153 days, 2 hours, 16 minutes and 53 seconds to become the first-ever female crewed champions of the McIntyre Ocean Globe Race.

Hailing from diverse nations including the UK, Antigua, USA, Puerto Rico, Italy, France, Afghanistan and South Africa, they worked hard to become the first all-female crew to achieve this historic feat in the 50-years of the race.

The crew braved treacherous conditions and, after finishing, had to wait for over a week before they were finally pronounced official winners of the iconic race.

Jaca, who hails from the town of KwaMashu in KwaZulu Natal, was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and congratulations on what she had achieved.

Speaking to the media after the race, Jaca said, “It is unbelievable that we won. It is still sinking in.”

“I never thought someone would look up to me and be inspired.”

“I was always that kid at the back of everything,” said Jaca, “But now I like sharing my experience, and teaching the skills that I’ve learnt during my journey.”

“I’d like to talk to people who are not even sailors and tell that everything is possible, you just have to believe in yourself. Go out there, be proud and do your thing.”

Great Britain’s Queen Camilla hosted the crew of ‘Maiden’ at Clarence House, to congratulate them on their sensational achievement.

Jaca expressed her honour and joy of having represented KZN and her country, and looked forwarded to returning home after being away for more than a year.
