With the postponed TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024 now a few months away, Zambia has announced the appointment of former Swiss national Nora Hauptle as Copper Queens coach, on a three-year deal.
FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga says Hauptle had been hired to consolidate on the gains made in the women’s game.
Kamanga added the federation is excited by this appointment: “We are excited to announce the appointment of Nora Hauptle as the new Zambia Women National Team coach. We have every reason to believe that she has the pedigree and profile that will take us to the next level.”
“Her duty is to consolidate on the gains made in our women’s game in the last few years that has seen us win bronze at the WAFCON, qualify to a maiden FIFA World Cup in 2023 and back-to-back Olympic qualifications.”

Hauptle will be famously remembered for working with SC Sand in the German Frauen-Bundesliga, in 2020, where she was, at the time, the only female coach in the league. She left SC Sand in 2021 before being appointed Black Queens of Ghana coach in 2022.
The Ghana Football Association had wanted to keep the Swiss manager beyond the contracted period ending 31 December, 2024, but both parties were unable to reach agreement despite efforts to retain the 41-year-old tactician.

A former defender, she represented her native Switzerland in Europe at international level, and she retired in 2009 before she taking up the coaching reigns.
The Copper Queens have been drawn in Group A of the WAFCON 2024, where they have been placed alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ghana are now left without a head coach, just six months to the tournament, whereas the new Zambian coach already started on her first assignment in preparation of the continental showpiece, to oversee her side at the Four-Nations Invitational Tournament in February 2025.
FAZ will be hosting Ethiopia, Botswana, Tanzania, should they agree to participate, and Hauptle is set to use the schedule to assess the team she intends to take to Morocco for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
