Zoë Steyn won the Sea Harvest Nahoon Open in East London to complete her third competition victory on the WSL Africa 2021/2022 calendar on Sunday, 20 March.
Steyn previously won the Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill QS 1000 in December and last weekend’s Long Beach Open QS 1000.
“I’m really stoked. Thanks to my mom and dad and all my sponsors. To everyone who put on such a great event, my friends for making it so much fun and Greg for all the coaching,” said Steyn.
Steyn took an early lead in the final when she seamlessly combined five turns on a smaller wave for 7.25 points (out of a possible 10). Sarah Baum (Durban) accepted the challenge from Steyn and answered back with strong, vertical surfing in the pocket of the wave to also score a 7.25.
Steyn however didn’t leave anything to chance and quickly backed up her score with a decent 6.00. Baum tried desperately to get the required score in the dying seconds, but she fell agonisingly short. Aimee du Preez (East London) finished in third and Sophie Bell (Salt Rock) in fourth.
Steyn showed her local knowledge and experience at Nahoon Reef when she scored the event’s only perfect 10.00 point ride during the second semi-final. She caught a bigger set wave and like the crack of a whip, she hacked out two massive turns in the critical section of the wave, to get the perfect number from the judges.
