The cream of South African junior tennis stars will be showcasing their skills in the Western Cape when the two week-long Curro International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-18 tournaments take place at the Maties Tennis Club at the Coetzenburg Sport Grounds in Stellenbosch, starting this Saturday, 31 August.

The junior Grade 4 tournament takes place from 31 August until 8 September with the bigger level Grade 2 event taking place from 9 to 14 September.

For the seventh consecutive year, the annual event will take place at the world class facility that contains seven tennis hard courts. At stake for the young participants in the two events is the important international ranking points on offer.

This year, top young South African junior star Delien Kleinhans has been confirmed to participate.

Le Roux Conradie, the tournament organiser, said: “We remain privileged to have Stellenbosch as the place of choice for one of the most important junior events on the ITF tennis circuit. We have some of the most fantastic playing facilities here at Maties and we are looking forward to two weeks of top youth tournament action.

“This is the seventh edition of this tournament, and with each year, we strive towards an improved event and an experience for our guests coming down to the Western Cape. There will be a strong country representation with participating players coming from all parts of the world,” he added.

There are 225 youngsters from all parts of the world that will land at the Cape Town International airport in the two-week period.

From the 100 youngsters (both boys and girls) that will partake in the Grade 4 level, a quarter of that are expected to be from outside all parts of the world that includes the United States, Germany and the Netherlands. The Grade 2 tournament will have 125 entrants where half will be from outside the country.

The Two Tournaments Will Serve as Warm-Up Events for the Samaai Open

The two tournaments will serve as warm-up events for the prestigious Samaai Junior Open to be staged at Kelvin Grove Club in Cape Town from 16-21 September.

The Junior Grade A tournament, named after tennis legend David Samaai, is a major attraction and milestone for young tennis players across the world as it carries the highest-ranking points on the ITF Junior Circuit, outside of the four Junior Grand Slams.
