The golden girl and captain of South African Women’s Rugby Babalwa Latsha has scooped the 2024 Rugby Black List Women’s Performance Player award at a glittering ceremony that was held at Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby, on Tuesday, 30 April, 2024. 

Her accomplishments and unwavering dedication to her craft has awarded her the prestigious award. The Black Player List is a foundation that came together to recognise and reward Black rugby players for their contribution to the world of rugby. 

Latsha who currently plays for Harlequins Women’s rugby in England, hails from the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town, broke down gender barriers when she started playing rugby. She is trailblazer and has over the years become a beacon of hope for many aspiring female rugby players across the country. 

The accomplished South African rugby icon has a long list of achievements to her impressive portfolio. In 2014 she formed part of the inaugural South African Legends Association’s development programme, where she continues to actively work towards promoting women’s rugby. 

The star international was awarded the South Africa Rugby Women’s Top Achiever award in 2017, and in 2020 she made history when she became the first African women’s rugby player to turn professional, when she signed for Spain’s Eibar Rugby Taleda. Latsha is also the director of the Menstruation Foundation.

Her accolades include recogniition as a Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, and she sits on the board of O’Grace Land, an organisation working with at-risk women leaving the South African care system. 

Her work is testament to Latha’s passionate dedication to inspiring the next generation of female rugby players.
